How my time at Salford Business School prepares me for a career as a Social Media Executive

◊ My acquaintance with Social Media

Social Networking exists in our everyday life, but my engagement with social media is kind of new. Before I came to the UK for studies in MSc Digital Marketing, the previous year, not only I did not know what a Social Media Executive is, but also, the only social media usage I made was Instagram. Today, with all the embrace of knowledge of what is marketing, social media, and how of great importance is to acquire and acknowledge to use the social media world.

◊ Welcome to Salford Business School!

In September I visited United Kingdom for the first time with a little hesitation since the referendum of Brexit was still fresh. But, as soon as I set foot at the university, a touch of happiness flooded me. There was a bright new horizon with many new interesting elements that would defined who I am today.

◊ Module 1: Marketing and Services Management

My first contact with the module taught me how to manage the time that is provided for an assessment and how to search articles that are related to the course. Afterwards, in classroom was taught what Marketing is and its basic principles. It helped me develop my ability to research and critically evaluate complications that exist in service management. In more detail, for my assignment I provided a case study about Amazon in the USA by analyzing the Marketing mix (7Ps), micro and macro-environment (5 Forces, PESTEL) based on academic literature. On second assignment I gained knowledge on what are the gaps model of service quality and how to use them for an e-business benefit.

◊ Module 2: Digital Innovation

In classroom was presented the new phenomenon, Internet of Things and what it is. I was asked to deliver its threats and opportunities to the business scenery, as well as a digital academic poster about IoT in a specific topic and I chose Fashion.

The second assignment was highly entertaining. Creation of a blog post was required so to introduce a completely new and innovative idea as an app escorted by original digital media content.

◊ Module 3: Digital Marketing and Analytics

This module was highly demanding as it was my first contact with Google Analytics. But, What is Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a free Web analytics service that provides statistics and basic analytical tools for search engine optimization (SEO) and marketing purposes. The service is available to anyone with a Google account.

My first assignment required to provide a Digital Marketing plan for a Master course so to attract more customers. This review included: SWOT analysis, PESTEL analysis, SMART objectives, Gantt chart and create a Buyer Persona profile based on Google Analytics insights. In order to complete successfully the research, I was systematically watched the MOOCs videos that the University proposed and Youtube videos from professor Aleksej Heinze.

The second assignment was completely different than the previous ones regarding the structure of the participants. For the first time I joined a teamwork assessment which was structured by 6 members. The difficulties were present; we had to coordinate our time schedules, separate effectively the responsibilities equally, provide and listen ideas so to decide which is the best one without any adherence and be understandable in any sudden absence. The project which was commissioned by the leaders was to statistical analyze, explain and establish a strategic plan for Google Merchandise Store with the help of SPSS.

◊ Module 4: Search & Social Media Strategy

The last module has not been completed yet, but so far I have been taught how to search keywords in order to promote my social media profiles, monitor and analyze the methods that social media influencers use, set a Marketing long-term strategy (12 months) and a practical Search and Social Media plan including a Gantt chart, SMART objectives and Risk assessment so to forecast the potential risks.

Concluding, Salford Business school highly prepared me for a career as Social Media Executive, by changing my point of view about the social media usage, equipping me with appropriate knowledge; both theoretical and practical, and eventually, enhancing my confidence so to pursuit my dream job.
